ERP Software Selection by Independent ERP Consultants

Why Independent ERP Consultants?

Why should be obvious – you don’t want a consulting firm who is biased to steer you in a direction that would be beneficial for them. The benefit could be cash (but unlikely), or it could be selected to implement the system selected as they have a team who implements the chosen system. Some consulting firms could implement what they consider all the leading systems and therefore consider themselves independent ERP consultants.

But what if the best solution is with a lesser-known system designed for a specific industry? Some consulting firms claim a “ethical wall” (the term “Chinese wall” is not politically correct) to prevent conflicts of interest. But it’s really impossible to prevent it when both companies are working for the same company, and they firmly believe that it would be in the best interest of their client to use what they consider the best implementation consultants for the job.

How do you Know the Consultants are Independent?

That is not so obvious. The litmus test would be that their clients have selected more than just a few systems. Ask the consulting firm for a list of the systems selected by their clients.  And of course, you should talk to their references to validate this as well as their other qualifications.

What is the benefit of independent software selection?

The benefit is not just in considering all systems, but also in the software selection methodology, which should include alignment with strategic goals, detailed requirements based on a business process review rather than a generic checklist, scripted demonstrations and total cost of ownership. Some companies may decide to do the software selection themselves as they don’t trust anyone, they feel they have all the expertise they need or it’s too expensive for hiring independent ERP consultants.  An independent consulting firm should:

  • Save you time, expedite the process and reduce the risk.
  • Add best practice requirements based on industry experience.
  • Improve contract terms and maximize discount.
  • Ensure a smooth transition to implementation.
